Covering an enormous breadth of history in custom and language, the original Indigenous inhabitants of Australia are caretakers to a culture that is rich and diverse. Join us as we explore some of the fascinating aspects of aboriginal culture, history, art and food at Muru Mittigar.
Meaning "Pathway to Friends" in the original Dharug language - the original custodians of the Lower Blue Mountains - Muru Mittigar offers a uniquely genuine look into aboriginal culture. This is not a packaged, touristy place made for the crowds. Rather, Muru Mittigar is a place to meet aboriginal people face to face, with the chance to learn, ask questions and explore in an environment that is casual, informative and unintimidating.
Hear about indigenous language and beliefs. See, touch and learn about a range of traditional implements - from spears and shields, to didgeridoos, woomeras and boomerangs. Learn how to throw a returning boomerang - a fun and fabulous way to get a hands-on understanding of traditional hunting methods. Learn about different bush foods and medicines, and appreciate how the seemingly scant provisions of the bush were more than enough to see this 40,000+ year old culture thrive in the harshness of the Australian environment.
We'll also have the chance to enjoy some of the native riches, with a delicious morning tea of Wattleseed pikelets and damper (bush bread) with native jams.
We're proud to include this authentic insight into indigenous culture into our tour, and it is often rated by our travellers as one of the highlights of their day with us. Muru Mittigar has been the gold winner of both Australian and State Tourism awards for Indigenous and Cultural Tourism.
